Film Mentor

Background:

I have been working in the film industry for over 25 years as a writer/director, having made 4 feature films, a multi-platform drama and numerous award winning short films.

Educating undergraduate, post-graduate and young filmmakers, in addition to my filmmaking career, has been very rewarding, but the best part is working with individuals to help them achieve their goals, in what often seems an enormous and difficult-to-enter industry.

I am really pleased to offer my services as a film mentor, following my recent work with Creative East, where I mentored independent filmmakers to nurture their feature film projects towards funding.

My background is in writing and directing, but I also operate as a “self-shooter”, which enables me to work around the country as a director/camera operator/DOP, which is a valuable skill to have, as there is always work in this field.

As such, I can offer potential mentees a range of mentoring options. Below I have listed the most common ones I have found to be the most productive for mentees.

Mentoring Options:

  • Shaping and developing film projects

  • Script development and script editing.

  • Building skills in writing & directing.

  • Develop “self-shooter” skills and career prospects.

  • Advice on industry standard resume’s and creating career plans for the UK film industry.

  • Contacts and Introductions - development, production, distribution, sales etc…

  • On-set mentor for self-generated projects.

  • Bring you on to my own projects, where you can get pro-credits and meet other industry crew members

  • Project viability - What kinds of projects do you want to make, and are they viable?

This is a sample of the most productive mentoring services I have offered to date, but I am happy to meet your individual needs, as its important to recognise that every creative has their own pathway to the industry.

Mentor sessions can be offered in a number of ways, including online and face to face consultations, training sessions, and on-set experience.

Prices:

I am very passionate about inclusion in the film industry and opportunities for all.  My rates are therefore tailored to meet your individual circumstances.

My minimum hourly rate matches film school tutor rates, in order for it to be a viable service, but I can offer 3 month, 6 month or yearly packages with a range of sessions contained in each package to suit your career aspirations.

Qualifications and experience in teaching and mentoring:

I have taught at many of the leading film institutions in the UK, including Met Film School, London Film Academy, London Film School, Regents University, BFI Academy, Norwich University of the Arts.

I hold a PGCERT Education qualification in higher education for the arts.

I have also designed and delivered film education courses for Picturehouse Cinemas.

I am part of the Creative East Mentoring programme for 2023/2024.

Please note, I also have a specialism in working with neurodiverse filmmakers.

Personal message:

”Filmmaking can be a lonely pursuit, especially when you are at the beginning of your journey. Confidence and resilience are as important as talent and creativity, to ensure that you keep focused and don't give up your dreams.

I want to be there for you to give you the support you need, and give you a hand-up to where you deserve to be.

I’ll motivate you and bring out the best in you.

Together we can achieve your dreams”
